nardinisisters @lostingreatbook Thanks for the great ideas! #mglitchat -9:32 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

WaldenPondPress @ShelbyRBach If you're talking bloggers, about 4-5 months out works best - they have very busy schedules #mglitchat -9:32 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

KarenninaPosa Am getting sense that blogs, etc. are mostly to reach parents, teachers, etc. Is there an effective way to reach MGers online? #mglitchat -9:33 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

WaldenPondPress @ShelbyRBach This is especially true if you want to do something with them (giveaway/interview/etc) around release. #mglitchat -9:33 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

WaldenPondPress @KarenninaPosa - There are some middle graders who blog, so you can reach out there: Reading Vacation/Icey Books comem to mind #mglitchat -9:33 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

KimBriggs_Write @waldenpondpress @rachelnseigel @lostingreatbook @gregpincus You provided a tremendous amount of useful info about PR--Thanks! #mglitchat -9:33 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

kingdomofpatria QUESTION: for the group: what are some effective uses of a FB fan page? #mglitchat -9:33 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

TrayMMP @ShelbyRBach Looks like I have a different plan of attach than Walden Pond Press. But you get the idea... #mglitchat -9:33 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

elissacruz @WaldenPondPress @ShelbyRBach Especially when the pub season hits (our blog fills up very fast in Spring and Fall). #MGlitchat -9:34 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

SKymmellHarvey @KarenninaPosa In my experience as a teacher, middle school parents are more reluctant to introduce their kids to social media. #mglitchat -9:34 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

WaldenPondPress @KarenninaPosa - A lot of publishers also get involved in online tween communities as well, but there is cost involved #mglitchat -9:34 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

AlohaKarina @elissacruz I think you need to have some writing available (blog? samples?) so you have something 2 talk about. Speaks to style. #MGlitchat -9:34 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

TrayMMP School visits are a good way to speak directly to MG readers. They are not on twitter. #mglitchat -9:34 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

nardinisisters RT @WaldenPondPress:There are some middle graders who blog, so you can reach out there: Reading Vacation/Icey Books comem to mind #mglitchat -9:34 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

deegarretson @KarenninaPosa I haven't found a way to reach them online, they aren't supposed to be on Facebook if under 13 #mglitchat -9:34 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

gregpincus @waldenpondpress @KareninnaPosa this also speaks to keeping lists and being active beforehand. Many MG kids have blogs #mglitchat -9:34 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

gregpincus @KimBriggs_Write You're welcome! #mglitchat -9:35 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

lostingreatbook @SKymmellHarvey I'm a middle school librarian - I agree parents are reluctant, until school takes the lead & teaches the kids #mglitchat -9:35 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

amylvpoemfarm Is it true that presales determine how much a publisher promotes a book? #mglitchat -9:35 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

WaldenPondPress @gregpincus @KarenninaPosa - and there are more and more joining in every day #mglitchat -9:36 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

kellandrewsPA @deegarretson My nieces and her friends have all been 13 on Facebook for a few years. Like how I was 21. #mglitchat -9:36 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

WaldenPondPress @amylvpoemfarm Glad to hear it #mglitchat -9:36 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

lostingreatbook @TrayMMP No they aren't - but they are blogging more and more... #mglitchat -9:36 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

WaldenPondPress @amylvpoemfarm It can have some effect, especially the reaction of B&N #mglitchat -9:36 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

rachelnseigel @kellandrewsPA @deegarretson True, but I don't think we can really blantantly acknowledge it #mglitchat -9:36 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

KimBriggs_Write @_TimothyPower how did you target your blog? How do they find you? #mglitchat -9:36 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

gregpincus @KarenninaPosa most kids use the web differently than most of us adults. This age group is a bit hard to reach via blogs. #mglitchat -9:36 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

TrayMMP Find the middle schoolers that blog but there are definitely more options for parents, librarians, etc. Again, database upkeep. #mglitchat -9:36 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

kellybarnhill @SKymmellHarvey @KarenninaPosa And those that are on social media tend to swim in very small ponds. They're tough to find. #mglitchat -9:36 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

SKymmellHarvey @lostingreatbook We've started holding parent-student Internet safety sessions since our school has an iPad program. It's helped #mglitchat -9:36 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

kellypolark @SKymmellHarvey @KarenninaPosa I don't allow my 12yo son on facebook yet, but many of his peers are already on fb. #mglitchat -9:37 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

gregpincus @deegarretson Oh, they're on FB. But them being on there doesn't mean we'll interact with them. #mglitchat -9:37 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

AlohaKarina @deegarretson @KarenninaPosa Trust me they are definitely on FB, I taught 8th grade: they tweet, they FB. #MGlitchat -9:37 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

deegarretson @kellandrewsPA I know, but being a parental type, I don't want to feel like I'm encouraging them to bend the rules. #mglitchat -9:37 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

kingdomofpatria @gregpincus @KarenninaPosa Can you elaborate on how MG kids use the web differently? #mglitchat -9:37 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

lostingreatbook @nardinisisters @WaldenPondPress I have 200+ mid schoolers blogging/commenting on each other's blogs - ministry pilot & HUGE hit #mglitchat -9:37 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

nardinisisters QUESTION: How about websites? Ours is very geared toward mg, we get alot of hits. Is it kids or parents, teachers? #mglitchat -9:37 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

kellybarnhill @lostingreatbook @SKymmellHarvey I HAVE had entire classes of kids follow me on goodreads or librarything as a group project. #mglitchat -9:38 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

kellandrewsPA @rachelnseigel @deegarretson No, but a 13-year-old reader is a plausible MG readership -- might get some legit kids too. #mglitchat -9:38 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

TrayMMP I have a middle school reader who is on facebook - but authors directly contact her. I wouldn't like it. FB ads tho. #mglitchat -9:38 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

_TimothyPower @KimBriggs_Write I just decided to have fun for fun's sake. The kids that have showed up have already read my book. :) #MGlitchat -9:38 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

rachelnseigel @nardinisisters Do you have a spot for comments? #mglitchat -9:38 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

JillCorcoran But, having 3 kids on fb, I don't want any adult interacting with them, author or not. #mglitchat -9:38 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

lostingreatbook @SKymmellHarvey Excellent! You need to dispel the fears and teach parents and kids how to use tech properly - would love that! #mglitchat -9:38 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

WaldenPondPress I agree with @TracyMMP's point - MGers still get a lot of book suggestions from their parents/librarians - teens more frm friends #mglitchat -9:38 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

Jess_Keating @JillCorcoran That's what I was thinking too :) #mglitchat -9:38 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

JillCorcoran makes me nervous #mglitchat -9:38 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

johnpeterswrite I'm curious, are there many middle grade readers utilizing Kindle? #mglitchat -9:38 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

nardinisisters @rachelnseigel yes. and we also display art that our fans have made for us. #mglitchat -9:39 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

SKymmellHarvey @kellybarnhill What a fantastic idea to have whole classes follow you! Our school uses GoodReads for our book club. #mglitchat -9:39 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

story_queen I think mg readers often search for mg authors online...they might not interact on the author's blog, tho. #mglitchat -9:39 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

kellybarnhill @JillCorcoran Exactly. Too much of a creeper vibe. #mglitchat -9:39 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

WaldenPondPress @nardinisisters I'd still say mostly adults. Although it can become a destination for kids who are fans of yours/want to connect #mglitchat -9:39 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

rachelnseigel @nardinisisters Many publishers have kid-pages now. Scholastic, Random House and Harper Collins have excellent ones. #mglitchat -9:39 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

kellandrewsPA @TrayMMP Do authors usually make initial contact with readers? I haven't seen that for any age. #mglitchat -9:39 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

gregpincus @kingdomofpatria Google for Pew Internet reports on teens online, as one place to see the differences. #mglitchat -9:39 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

rachelnseigel @nardinisisters They develop screensavers, wallpapers, games, etc... to support MG books. #mglitchat -9:39 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

LaurelSnyder @JillCorcoran I always make a point, during school visits, of saying kids can email with WITH their parents. #mglitchat -9:39 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

kellypolark @JillCorcoran What about "liking" an author's page? That seems safe enough, no? The authors can't see their profile. #mglitchat -9:40 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

WaldenPondPress @johnpeterswrite Good question - the #s are rising esp. as parents give their kids hand-me-downs, but still very few #mglitchat -9:40 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

nardinisisters @kellybarnhill Yes, we just got a review from a 5th grade class who reviews on goodreads. #mglitchat -9:40 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

encurtido @gregpincus that's all really good advice! exactly what the marketing dept at Random House tells authors #mglitchat -9:40 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

KarenninaPosa Good point RT @JillCorcoran: But, having 3 kids on fb, I dont want any adult interacting with them, author or not. #mglitchat -9:40 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

rachelnseigel @nardinisisters You can probably tell from some of the comments- and the art whether or not it's kids. #mglitchat -9:40 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

WaldenPondPress @johnpeterswrite But we just did our first ebook promotion for a MG book - I'm sure there will be more to come #mglitchat -9:40 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

BookaliciousPam My daughter goes to author websites for games, extra info on the universe. She doesn't care who the author is or what they say. #mglitchat -9:40 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

LaurelSnyder @kellandrewsPA Authors are doing that this very second ;) #mglitchat -9:40 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

TweetMeNadine Don't most parents still buy the books for their middlegrade readers? Isn't it logical to target blogs & promos to whole family. #mglitchat -9:40 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

gregpincus @kingdomofpatria Also, @zephoria has done great stuff about how teens use the web. prolly start at http://t.co/3TJxSfUZ #mglitchat -9:40 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

lostingreatbook @_TimothyPower Ereaders are becoming huge parts of kids reading patterns - even reading on the smartphone is getting more popular #mglitchat -9:40 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

kellybarnhill @johnpeterswrite My 12yo daughter has a Nook; LOVES it. She prefers paper, but she can get library books faster electronically. #mglitchat -9:40 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

story_queen As a parent, I might not encourage my mg child to interact with adults online, but reading an author's blog=ok (just no comments) #mglitchat -9:41 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

WaldenPondPress @story_queen Yes, more common that they will go to the author's website and may email him/her w/qs #mglitchat -9:41 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

rachelnseigel @lostingreatbook Ug- my eyes definitely can't take that! ;-) #mglitchat -9:41 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

kdueykduey @gregpincus Hi. I am about to leave to work, but one of these days we need to have a real conversation. Hope all is well with you.#mglitchat -9:41 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

LM_Preston I know for our MGs we target bookstores and libraries by sending ARC w/ Media Kit. Also go to ALA, PLA & other library conference #mglitchat -9:41 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

AlohaKarina Has anyone mentioned Shelfari? my 7th grade daughter is big into http://t.co/cczHhMeo, she always hopes to interact w/authors. #mglitchat -9:41 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

kellandrewsPA Makes sense to me too. MT @BookaliciousPam: My daughter goes to author websites for games, extra info on the universe. #mglitchat -9:41 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

chorkie Blogs may be old to us, but they are definitely new to most teachers. #mglitchat -9:41 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

WaldenPondPress @TweetMeNadine Yes, it's definitely important to reach out to moms and dads as they generally still make the purchases #mglitchat -9:41 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

rachelnseigel @AlohaKarina And now Pininterest as well! #mglitchat -9:42 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

TrayMMP For more pervasive outreach - I still push books to bookstores and librarians and parent reviews. YA world = the opposite. #mglitchat -9:42 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

kingdomofpatria I'm curious as to whether the long-delayed release of JKR's #Pottermore website will encourage kids reading on Kindles, etc. #mglitchat -9:42 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

gregpincus @kdueykduey Yes! We must chat. We keep passing in tweets and in person. That must stop! #mglitchat -9:42 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

deegarretson @AlohaKarina that's good to know, I haven't looked at Shelfari much. #mglitchat -9:42 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

kellandrewsPA @LaurelSnyder Heehee, you're right. I thought we were talking FB. I haven't had any authors I didn't know reach out there. #mglitchat -9:43 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

Jenny_Lundquist What have you guys been talking about tonight? #mglitchat -9:43 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

TrayMMP I think a question to be asked is: Shelfari, Good Reads, FB, twitter, traditional outreach - how does author do all at once? #mglitchat -9:44 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

rachelnseigel @lostingreatbook That was cool. Patrick Carmen has a lot of enhanced content for tablet/phones as well. #mglitchat -9:44 PM Feb 23rd, 2012

  1. Thanks for posting this- & now I'm off to look up guidelines on answering kids. I answer all fan letters & figure blog comments are same, especially as they're out in the open. It'll be interesting to see.
